While you may not see chain saws often, they have many applications, and many people use them daily. These devices can be dangerous, but great uses come with that danger. The world uses chain saws for many different things, and some are more obvious than others. When you step back and assess its many applications, you’ll find there’s no better tool for the job than the chain saw.
Early Childbirth
While everyone associates chain saws with cutting wood, that wasn’t the original purpose. Rather, two doctors invented the chain saw in 1780 to remove parts of the pelvis that interfered with birthing a large baby. Previously, doctors used knives to cut around the pelvis, but it was painful and time-consuming.
Modern-day chain saws would also be painful, but at the time, the doctors powered the chain saw with a hand crank, meaning it was much less intense. These surgical chain saws were much smaller and were efficient bone-cutting tools. Thanks to modern science, chain saws are no longer needed in childbirth.
Fighting Fires
A chain saw is one of the best tools firefighters use in the field. Structural firefighters don’t often use chain saws, but their wildland firefighting colleagues do. Wildland firefighters must clear out foliage, branches, and even entire trees to remove the fuel for these fires; one of the best tools for that is a chain saw. It is also one of the most common wildland firefighting tools, as it can clear brush and large obstructions better than any other tool.
Clearing Trees
Other types of laborers also use chain saws to clear trees and branches that crowd a space. Sometimes, trees are close to electrical or telephone lines, and their branches could interfere with these lines as they grow. The city will pay people to trim these trees or cut them down entirely.
Landscapers use chain saws to cut down trees in an area that may not be the most aesthetically pleasing, or the landowner wants them gone. Trees can get in the way of views, branches can damage roofs or windows, and bark can harbor unwanted pests. People cut down trees and branches for many reasons, and chain saws are the best tools for the job.
The world uses chain saws for many different things, and they will only become more versatile as more industries use them. In some cases, this tool can be the difference between life and death; in others, it is great for making jobs easier.
