How To Take Care of Yourself During a Job Search

Whether you’re entering the workforce for the first time or attempting to switch companies, landing a job is hard. It doesn’t matter who you are—the job market is heavily saturated, and filling out applications is practically a full-time endeavor. Of course, if you’re in the middle of a job search, you know this. However, a lot of professionals make the mistake of getting so entrenched in the search that they neglect themselves. We don’t want that to happen to you. Here’s how to take care of yourself during a job search so you can land your dream job and survive the process healthily.

Calibrate Your Expectations

Everyone hopes to be offered the first job they apply to, but that’s simply unrealistic. As we mentioned, the job search takes a lot of time and effort, so you should calibrate your expectations to match this reality.

You should also go into the process understanding the work required of you. Invest time in crafting the perfect resume, cover letters, and interview responses. You shouldn’t expect the hiring company to ask all the right questions—it’s on you to make sure you present what you want to.

Don’t Let the Search Consume You

A lot of people feel unsettled during times of unemployment, so they anxiously fill out hundreds of applications and sit refreshing their emails until something catches. Though it’s perfectly natural to feel exceptionally nervous and driven during this time, remember to take a step back for your mental health.

Life stress is one of the most common factors contributing to depression and anxiety, and searching for jobs is a huge life stress. If you let the search consume you, you neglect your emotional and physical need for rest and enjoyment.

The best thing you can do is dedicate a certain number of hours each day to your job search. However long you dedicate, stick to that number as best you can. That way, you know when to put yourself fully into job applicant mode and when to accept your progress for the day and move on.

Take Rejection as Redirection

Though cheesy, the popular quip that “rejection is redirection” is true. You can’t force someone to hire you, regardless of how great you would be for the position. Once you accept that, you can move on from rejections and use the feedback to refine your approach.

Also, find the encouragement in each rejection! Even if you get turned down after several rounds of interviews, that indicates that the employer wanted to spend time and resources on interviewing you. That’s a win, even if it doesn’t feel like it.

Stimulate Your Confidence

On the topic of rejection, getting turned down for opportunities can feel disheartening. Unfortunately, you will probably experience more rejections than you do offers. However, this doesn’t mean you aren’t a talented and capable professional.

So remind yourself of that! Confidence is key during your job search, so spend your free time engaging in activities that empower you. Say positive affirmations, practice hobbies you’re good at, dress in a way that makes you feel strong, and surround yourself with supportive people who uplift you.

You could also consider stepping out of your comfort zone by attending networking events or workshops. The more you expose yourself to new experiences, the more you build your confidence and expand your professional network.

If you know how to take care of yourself during a job search, you can care for your mental health as you pursue your next big opportunity. Your perfect job is out there, and these tips will help you land it with peace of mind and confidence!
