The 7 Best Ways to Take Care of Your Diamonds

Diamonds are a person’s best friend.  They are an expensive purchase and should be taken care of properly to ensure they last for generations.  Diamonds require an extreme level of care and maintenance.  They are one of the most delicate gemstones and can be damaged by chemicals, oil, and improper handling.  There is a lot of misinformation out there about caring for your celtic diamond engagement ring.

1) A professional cleaning kit

One of the best ways to take care of your diamonds is to hire a professional cleaner.  They have both the necessary tools and experience to keep your diamonds sparkling clean without harming them.  If you can’t afford to have them professionally cleaned, it’s okay because you can put together a kit of your own.  Keep reading for more tips.

2) Use a lint-free cloth

Cleaning diamonds with a lint-free cloth is a must.  The cloth needs to be soft and microfiber because the roughness of cotton or wool can scratch the diamond.  The diamond will not shine if you use a paper towel to clean it.  A damp cloth can also be used as long as it is dry at the end of the process.

3) A polishing cloth

Cleaning a diamond with a polishing cloth can be done in seconds.  The best way to do this is to use the cloth and rub it on the diamond.  Make sure you’re using a circular motion and always start from the top of the diamond, working your way down.  First, apply polish to one side of the cloth and then use it on one half of the diamond.  After that, flip the cloth over and repeat the process on the other half of the diamond.  When you’re done, use a clean part of the cloth to wipe any residue off your diamonds.

4) Q-tips

If you’ve ever thought about how diamonds are cleaned, you might be surprised that they use the same Q-tips you do. Diamonds are so hard that only carborundum can be used to clean them and it’s a process called polishing.  In the past, diamonds were polished by hand with steel wool, which would cause scratches. Today, diamonds are polished in a machine that uses carborundum to have them shine beautifully.

5) A solution of soap and water in a bowl

Most diamonds in a ring are not the same size. If they’re not, they can’t all fit in the same solution or soap and water and be cleaned at the same time.  You’ll have to clean them separately.  Start off by using q-tips as instructed above.

6) A mild dish detergent

When you have a ring with more than just a diamond on it, do some more research.  Cleaning emeralds will require a more gentle material than cleaning sapphires.  In general, a soft-bristled brush should be used to remove any dirt from the surface of the diamond.  Then, it is recommended that the diamond be wiped with a clean, dry cloth.

Diamonds are created in a very difficult process that can take up to 10 months before the complete gemstone is ready.  It is important to take proper care of them.
