There are over 4,000 recognized religions worldwide and three major world religions: Judaism, Islam, and Christianity. Of those three major religions, you’ll find roughly 15 million Jews, two million Muslims, and two billion Christians. That means you’re likely to meet and make friends of a different religion sometime in your life. Keep reading to learn about some ways to support friends with different religious beliefs than you.
Listen to Them
All good friendships require listening. We listen when our friends complain about traffic, share a delicious new recipe, or gush about their significant other. That means we can also listen when they share their religious experience. Maybe they’re excited to tell you about an upcoming holiday. Perhaps they experienced discrimination. You might have even just asked them a question about their religion. Regardless of the reason for the conversation, listen as openly and intently as you always would.
Find Common Ground
We build friendships on shared interests, including religious devotion. Even if you believe in different religions, many people in the world aren’t religious or spiritual at all, so you have that factor in common. In addition, the three major world religions have a lot in common, from the importance of prayer to monotheistic belief. Even if you and your friend don’t believe in any major world religions, many religions overlap in their encouragement to make the world a better place. You can bond over this common religious ground as you grow your friendship and support each other.
Attend Religious Services Together
Sometimes the best way to support someone is by experiencing their beliefs firsthand. If you and your friend are comfortable, attend religious services together. For example, a Muslim friend could support a Christian friend by helping them plan their baptism and attending the ceremony. Jewish and Muslim friends could support each other by celebrating Eid and Hanukkah together.
Sharing your different religious beliefs to form lasting friendships is rewarding and wonderful. While there are many ways you can support them, remember that the most important support is simply being their friend. No matter your differences, as long as you focus on your friendship, you can maintain a positive relationship.
